Warhammer 40k: Space Marine Review

I’m not a big review guy, I won’t be writing any novels about every last detail of a game.

I’m actually more interested in the details when I’m previewing a game and I’m looking to see what the game might bring to the table once it’s launched.

After I get the game though it’s all about one thing, is the game fun? the answer to that question with Warhammer is a big hell yes!

Space Marine is a 3rd person shooter at it’s best, with non stop balls to the wall action, the game makes you feel like a supreme bad ass time and time again.

The gameplay is very fluid, it’s fast, fun and never gets old. It wont win any game of the year awards though as the voice acting, story and cut scenes aren’t as polished I would have liked. If you’re looking for a great story or character development then you’re in the wrong place. This game is all about kicking ass and taking names, and looking cool while doing it.

On the mp side it has a pretty in-depth level progression and weapon unlock system. It’s classed based combat and is extremely customizable but it wont keep you from the elite mp titles in your library. It’s fun but it has some real balance issues and every match I played ended up the same way. Everyone jet packing around jumping towards each other swinging swords or axes. It’s got it’s moments but I found myself getting bored with it rather quickly.

The game was a great time. The unpolished aspects didn’t ruin how fun the gameplay was and the balance issues in mp didnt over shadow what was over all a really good experience. I give it an 8.5/10

Warhammer 40k: Space Marine achievement guide

If you’re looking to score 6 or 7 hundred points in a game with minimal time and effort, Space Marine isn’t your bag. You can blow through the campaign in about 7 hours on normal, but you’re only going to get around 300 or so points. Not too much bang for your buck in the achievement hunt I say.

Although if you like the game as much as I do you will appreciate the achievement lay out and enjoy spending the time it’ll take to unlock them all. You can check the achievement list here and you’ll see what I mean about layout, nothings too difficult and most are tied to just killing a certain number of enemies or getting a certain amount of kills with certain guns.

I don’t know which side of the fence you’re on regarding multiplayer achievements but I love them. As long as they don’t require dumb luck or random circumstances to occur for them to be unlocked. Those kind of stupid multiplayer achievements really chap my ass, I’m looking at you Halo3.

Warhammer has 13 mp achievements worth 255 pts and luckily, none of them are of the above variety. All are doable although some will be very time-consuming.

There are some secret achievements but they are all story based and can not be missed so you don’t need to worry about those. There are 2 achievements that require you to play on the hardest difficulty level but everything else you can unlock on the easiest difficulty setting. Cake walk.

you will have to play through the game at least twice to unlock everything. Over all this game is really easy on the achievements just time-consuming. All of the achievements are really self-explanatory so there’s not much to go over. I’ve found 3 videos that will help show you the best spot to get the marksman achievement, Find  the locations of all the Servo Skulls and the best spot to get the chain of death.

Warhammer 40K, Space Marine preview

I slapped Space Marine in the face by leaving it off my games of September list, but it’s ok. The demo kicked my ass and I loved every minute of it. I had no clue what the game was about as I’ve never played any of the previous Warhammer games or read any of the fiction based in this universe.

You take on the role of Captain Titus, as you lead your space marines in a battle against an Orc hoard one million strong. your goal is to stop the Orcs from getting a hold of a massive machine of war known as battle titan. This 3rd person action shooter runs off the same engine as Darksiders and feels like it’s Gears of War meets God of War.

Ofcourse that’s not the case as the Warhammer universe has been around since 1987. It’s actually those games, and others, who have partially taken their lead off of previous games in this series.

The graphics aren’t on the same level with some other top titles but at the same time, they dont detract from your experience at all. You have 4 guns in your arsenal that are selected via the D-pad, they each feel good to shoot and are useful in different situations. You have grenades as well a chainsword when the Orcs get too close.

Speaking of your chainsword, it’s the focal point of many a creative ways to kill your enemy’s, execution style. Just tap B once an enemy is stunned to unleash a beautiful violent finish. Each kill builds up your meter and when it’s maxed out you can  basically initiate a berserker mode and destroy everything in sight.

You can hide behind things to recharge your shields although there is no cover system in the game. You manuever around the battle field quicker with a dodge roll exactly like the one you’ll find in Gears of War. You also get to play around with a jet pack in the demo that let’s you really get around and even adds to your offense. You can charge down to the ground from the air and either kill or stun enemy’s in large groups.

The demo included no multiplayer but I hear it’s supposed to be class based. We’ll see how that works out when the game launches on Sept. 6th. The demo has definitely done it’s job in convincing me that Space Marine is a game worth my time.
